Say what you’re doing

“I’m finding a quieter place to stand.”

Offer practical help

“I can explain what has been difficult this morning.”

Offer practical help

“I can help ask for a different arrival plan.”

Make time where possible

“We can wait here for a minute first.”

Only if there really is time. Be clear about any limits.

Look beyond the words.

School distress can signal unmet needs or harm. Investigate the situation with your child and school.

Use the person’s preferred communication. A clearer request can be more helpful than an indirect hint.

What to notice next

Consider what was happening before the difficult moment, what your child communicated, and what changed afterwards. One easier occasion does not prove a strategy caused the change.
